Smartphones, Less Facebook and Avoidance 2012

Since writing about Smartphones, Facebook and Avoidance last year it seemed logical to do an end of the year follow-up since my phone died and I bought a “smartphone”.

At first I hated it, but as soon as I learned how to work it, I loved it.

Recently it introduced me to “Swype”..yeah, I know…anyways, its a type of mobile phone keyboard for texting…most of us tap a key for each letter but with the “Swype” keyboard you must be able to spell and Swype connects the letters by “swyping”. I was pulled grudgingly into using swype keyboard simply because, I didn’t choose it. One day I sent a text and the next thing there was the Swype keypad instead of Tap…the long/short is I learned a lot in a year like the smartphone is only as smart as it’s owner.

The U.S. most expensive Italian Ice…it only took 9 police officers, a cruiser and 3 police cars to resolve the domestic dispute…(do the math) and I’m sure you will agree that we could help balance the budget by eliminating this kind of waste. False or frivolous 911 calls like this should be billed to caller.

Its that time of year when the independent film community come together in different venues to screen low-budget “Blockbusters”. One might say that “Indie” film festivals are the “Premiere” screening of what is to come to the big screen.

Usually there’s a film festival winner though this year may be a little different because while the film festivals open and close in major cities, it seems that a contender for “Best” screened play is in the midst of unfolding as possibly the best non-fictitious intriguing account of power, passion and class, whose story’s end, for the first time, will be determined by an audience of observer(s) unsuspectingly “observed”.

The bad guy is The System. The System is powerful, almost too powerful for the protagonist’s hope of victory or assure the foe, vindication.

Its a story about the power of the money as a medium of exchange. Money stops at nothing or anyone without the subtle influence of exchange it can buy. It is a case that when closed will have revealed the formula of influence.

By the time this case goes through the justice system, the lives of innocents caught in the cross-fire will be forever changed for better, worse, but changed.

The stake: an empire and one of the most coveted position of leadership.

The victim: a foreigner ignorant to the ways of the country granting asylum.

It appears that some type of high-level discretionary “incident” is now less discrete. The seemingly naive victim must now, for the first time, learn the “sideways” heart of the host country. And the reckless, irrational ego, will have to rely on The System to keep it strong. For Money, its just a matter of formalities, bit of humiliation and pretentious sanction(s). But not one second’s doubt of eventual victory.

The victim has to blindly trust those who rush to aid, test the allegiance of the few intimates, and hope against The Power that seduces by presenting opportunity to realize hopes and dreams deferred.

This is about culture, history, war, race and gender whose future is most often determined, controlled and dependent on The System.

Wow what a year 2010 turned out to be?!! As I clear space for 2011 I can’t help but reflect on the things that inspired me along the way. First let me admit I have procrastinated on putting this particular thought out there for awhile. Partly because I’m a grown-up and secondly because its about “Paris Hilton”. Well I think if you played with dolls, specifically “Barbie” type dolls, you’ll know where I’m coming from. Her resolution inspired/is inspiring. I like her. There I said it. She is an original “bad girl” born with the proverbial “silver spoon” who in living life stumbles, changes clothes and drives off in her Barbie car!

My phone is a relic. If I need to text, I must tap each key up to four times to create a word. No camera or video features and the display is the size of four small stamps. I even have to completely save a new number before hanging up with caller. One day I needed to communicate by texting and realized my phone was smarter than me because I was doing all the work. I also realized how this mobile device had changed my life where it became my dependent who demanded my service not vice versus.

One day I was running late and in my haste forgot my cell phone. I had absolutely no time to go backwards. So I coolly made a decision to be OK without it, back in a time when there were only land-line phones and voice messaging was the new “it”.

Well no sooner then the decision was made I thought I would use my cell phone-less time to complete other neglected tasks as I am a multi-tasker. Whenever I’m in transit I process out my to-do list or read. Since I’d also forgotten my reading material in the rush I was left with my thoughts.

As I reached for my cell to return some old unreturned calls, I saw a flashed vision of my cell with that “I told you so” arrogant smirk on its tiny face .

Well not to be outdone my resolve to live without a phone that day became stronger. Thats where Facebook comes in. My laptop is the other brain I don’t leave home without. If theres a wifi signal, I’m connected. I decided to respond to my family and friends through Facebook by private messaging or wall depending on the communication.

Because I am one of the few people who sees Facebook as valuable tool to be in touch with family members and close friends I was captivated by all the other dramas unfolding among “friends of friends”. I blushed a few times, played mafia wars and decided I didn’t really need to talk to anyone after all. And that is why I know for sure now that I am smarter than my cell but I need it more than it needs me.
